Are there free ADU grants in California? The honest answer

No — there is no universal “free ADU grant” program in California. Despite what the ads suggest, the state does not hand out free money to build an accessory dwelling unit. What exists is narrower: limited, income-qualified assistance that is often capped or waitlisted, and financing programs that are loans, not grants. If an ad implies otherwise — especially if it pushes urgency or asks for an upfront fee tied to “government money” — treat it as a red flag.

The better question
